Under 19s 2s Grand Final Our Under 19s 2s team played their grand final last weekend against South Morang, and unfortunately missed out by only 9 points. However, what a remarkable year for our team that puts us in great stead for the 2027 season. They started in Division 3 before being regraded up into Division 2. They then ended the season 3rd on the ladder in Division 2. Their finals campaign then brought them into the Division 2 Grand Final. In the grand final, unfortunately only 6 points were scored in the first half. However, the team rallied together after half time, and got within 9 points of the win. While not the ideal outcome, the Under 19s 2s 2026 season is a remarkable achievement that the players, coaches and the club should be very proud of. Bring on 2027! Sam Gilmore 2026 Rosbrook Medalist Sammy Gilmore, our senior ruck, former captain and one of the best people and players around our club has taken out the 2026 NFNL League's Best and Fairest medal. This is a remarkable achievement in particular because of the personal issues Sam and his wife Mads have had to deal with during the season this year that kept Sam away from playing for 7 weeks. This award goes to show exactly what sort of person Sam is, and we're so very lucky to have Sam and Mads involved in our club. Luke Bunker, 2026 Coaches MVP In another remarkable achievement for 2026, Luke Bunker has won the NFLN 2026 Coaches MPV. Again. For the 3rd time in a row.   Just remarkable. 3 Grand Finals Saturday Have we got a deal for you! The Seniors, Reserves and Under 19s 1s games are at Epping Recreational Reserve, playing against: Seniors - Montmorency @ 2:10 pm. Reserves - Montmorency @ 11:55 am. Under 19s 1s - Eltham @ 9:40 am. while the Under 19s 2s game is at Lalor Reserve, playing against: Under 19s 2s - Panton Hill @ 9.00 am. (Note the 9.00am start). Finals Bye Round For All Teams Our Seniors, Reserves and Under 19s 1s have ended their 2026 seasons on the top of the ladder, so they have automatically had a bye this week - the first week of the finals series. The great news is that our Under 19s 2s won their Finals Round 1 match against Laurimar last week by 5 points, and since they're 3rd on the ladder, they too have a bye this week. All of our teams certainly won't be slacking off on training of course though, to prepare for the rest of the finals series games. Firstly, our Under 19s 2s are playing Laurimar on Sunday at Lalor Reserve starting at 9:40 am. Secondly, our Under 19s 1s are playing Montmorency at Montmorency Park on Saturday, starting at 9:40 am. These changes are due to our Under 19s 2s playing in the first game of their final series, and our Under 19s 1s having a bye during the season. Sorry for the confusion! Our Senior and Reserves teams are at home on Saturday against Diamond Creek, starting at 11:55 am and then 2:10 pm. More 2027 Re-signings We've also had 3 more players commit to season 2027! Round 17 This week our Under 19 2s are playing against Old Paradians at Warringal Park from 9:40am, so come down to the oval to watch our 3rd on the ladder Under 19s play. Our Under 19s 1s, Reserves and Seniors are playing Hurstbridge at Hurstbridge, starting at 9:40 am. Tom Wills Biography Available at the Club Tom Wills was an outstanding cricketer who wanted to create a sport that would keep cricketers fit over the winter period. The result was the creation of Australian Rules football during the late 1850’s, and a number of teams formed in inner suburban Melbourne. Today, Aussie Rules football is our national game. In the 1870’s, Tom Wills lived in Jika Street Heidelberg, opposite the Heidelberg Police Station, just up the road. He coached and played cricket with the Heidelberg Cricket Club, and most likely was also associated with the Heidelberg Football Club in its early days. Tom Wills died on the 2nd of May 1880, 146 years ago. He is buried in Heidelberg Cemetery. Heidelberg’s story has grown alongside the story of  the game itself, and the fact that its founding figure now rests in this community makes our 150-year milestone even more meaningful. Greg de Moore has written the book describing the incredible life of Tom Wills, and has donated signed copies of his book to the club as a fund raiser. If you would like a copy, they are for sale at the bar inside the clubrooms for $35. 2027 Signings and Re-Signings We've had a number of signings and re-signings over the past few weeks. 2027 Senior Womens Coach After several years as an assistant within our Senior Women’s program, Jacob Tascone steps into the Senior Women’s Coach role for 2027. Jacob brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the position, having been an important part of the coaching group and the development of the program over recent seasons. His understanding of the playing group, the club and the standards expected at Heidelberg makes him a great fit to lead the team forward. We’re looking forward to seeing Jacob take the next step in his coaching journey and continue building on the work already done within our women’s program. Congratulations, Jacob. Also a very big thank you to our 2025 and 2026 Senior Women's Coach, Craig Hayes. He has put a huge amount of time and effort into the Senior Women's program over the past two seasons, entering the finals both times. Round 16 The day starts with our Under 19 2s team playing Lower Plenty at Warrningal Park, while our Under 19 1s team play Eltham at Eltham, with both games starting at 9:40 am. Our Senors and Reserves also play Eltham at Eltham, with the Reserves playing at 11:55 am, and the Seniors playing at 2:10 pm. After a valiant effort in the 3rd quarter, coming from no points to 4 goals and 3 points, unfortunatley our Senior Women were beaten by Banyule in the final quater by 2 points, and sadly that means the end of their finals run and the 2026 season. Congratulations to our Senior Women for making it into the 2026 season finals. We can't beat the Slime! Well we don't know how they've done it, however Greensborough A.K.A. the Slime, have managed to raise $17,370.00 through the Toyota Good For Footy Fundraising Raffle, and are sixth on the ladder across the whole of Victoria. We've dropped the ball this year unfortunately, and have only raised $1,440.00. There's not enough time left for us to beat the Slime! What we should be able to do is at least get to $2000. Remember, the club receives all ticket sales revenue, while you get a chance to win 1 of 3 cars, plus many other prizes. Tickets are just $5 each. Our Senior Women take centre stage on Sunday as they begin their finals campaign against Banyule in an Elimination Final at La Trobe University, starting at 12:15 pm. Coming right through the club’s junior ranks, Matt has developed into a dependable senior player. From the junior ranks through to senior football, Matt has celebrated an Under 19 premiership, three senior premierships and a reserves premiership along the way. RIP Fitzy As you've heard, Nathan Fitzgerald of the Epping Football Netball Club tragically suffered from a fatal accident during the Epping and Lalor Reserves game last weekend. Our club's thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the Fitzgerald family and everyone at the Epping Football Netball Club during this time. Our thoughts are also with the Lalor Football Netball Club players, officials and supporters who were so close this terrible accident.
