Tom Wills was an outstanding cricketer who wanted to create a sport that would keep cricketers fit over the winter period. The result was the creation of Australian Rules football during the late 1850’s, and a number of teams formed in inner suburban Melbourne. Today, Aussie Rules football is our national game.
In the 1870’s, Tom Wills lived in Jika Street Heidelberg, opposite the Heidelberg Police Station, just up the road. He coached and played cricket with the Heidelberg Cricket Club, and most likely was also associated with the Heidelberg Football Club in its early days.
Tom Wills died on the 2nd of May 1880, 146 years ago. He is buried in Heidelberg Cemetery. Heidelberg’s story has grown alongside the story of the game itself, and the fact that its founding figure now rests in this community makes our 150-year milestone even more meaningful.
Greg de Moore has written the book describing the incredible life of Tom Wills, and has donated signed copies of his book to the club as a fund raiser. If you would like a copy, they are for sale at the bar inside the clubrooms for $35.

After several years as an assistant within our Senior Women’s program, Jacob Tascone steps into the Senior Women’s Coach role for 2027.
Jacob brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the position, having been an important part of the coaching group and the development of the program over recent seasons. His understanding of the playing group, the club and the standards expected at Heidelberg makes him a great fit to lead the team forward.
We’re looking forward to seeing Jacob take the next step in his coaching journey and continue building on the work already done within our women’s program.

Also a very big thank you to our 2025 and 2026 Senior Women's Coach, Craig Hayes. He has put a huge amount of time and effort into the Senior Women's program over the past two seasons, entering the finals both times.
